D3.287 - Adverse reactions and complications of Allergic Skin Test (SPT) in North Indian population

Poster abstract

Background

Background: SPT is generally recommended as gold standard diagnostic test for respiratory allergic diseases and considered a safe procedure. The anaphylaxis with SPT is limited to case report with overall risk of <0.02%. This study is aim to study the adverse reactions and complications of SPT in north Indian population.

Method

Method: This was an observational study conducted at V P Chest institute after approval from institute ethical committee. We enrolled all consecutive patients undergone SPT from 2021 to 2024 after proper written consent. All the enrolled subjects will undergo detailed clinical history and examination before test. The SPT was done as per Indian allergy immunotherapy guideline protocol. All the events associated with skin test during and after test (one hour) were recorded as per proforma.

Results

Result: We enrolled 1264 patients of bronchial asthma, Allergic rhinitis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis underwent SPT.  The mean age of study population was 34.76±15.53years with 661(52%) are male and 603(48%) female. A total of 41134 allergens testing were done on 1264 patients. The 4 sets of allergen testing done are of 58 aeroallergens, 68 food allergens, 6 aspergillus and two pigeon allergens. Out 1264 cases 608(48%) undergone aspergillus, 571(45%) aeroallergens, 72(6%) pigeon  and 60(5%) food allergens testing while 48(4%) cases with more than two set of allergens. No single case of anaphylaxis was seen however 7(0.5%) cases reported some reaction (WAO grade I). All patients with reaction responded with rest and assurance with no need of any treatment. (Table 1)

Conclusion

Conclusion: Similar to other part of world, the SPT is safe without any fatal reaction in north Indian populations. However special care should be take in children and patients with history of severe disease and should perform with all facility to treat anaphylaxis reaction.
