D2.542 - Prevalance and risk factors of atopic dermatitis among preschool children Gaziantep, a province in South-Eastern Turkey

Background

Atopic dermatitis is a disease that represents the first step in the allergy  march. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of atopic dermatitis and the risk factor for the disease in the preschool children in Gaziantep City.

Method

 Six preschool in the city of Gaziantep were appointed for the study. The families of 950 children between 42-84 months of age, who enrolled these preschools, were questioned via the question naires that we sent to their teachers.  58,9% of the cases are girls and 41,1% are boys. 

Results

The number of children, who had itchy rashes for at least 6 months, was 10% (95). The prevalence of atopic dermatitis (previously diagnosed by a physician) was 8.1% (77). Factors affecting the history of itchy rash for at least six months, presence of allergic disease in parents increases the risk 2.04 times, presence of smoker at home increase risk 1.74 times, presence of bird at home increase the risk 2.61 times. Factors affecting the diagnosis of eczema by the doctor; The mother's university education increases the risk 8.1 times and presence of allergic diseases in parents increases the risk 6.74 times.

Conclusion

The results of study suggest moderate-high  prevalence of atopic dermatitis in Gaziantep city. Mother's university  education  and presence of family history of allergic disease are determined as risk factors for atopic dermatitis.
