D3.407 - Clinic-pathological characteristics and comorbidities in adult patients with eosinophilic esophagitis in Greece

Poster abstract

Background

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic type 2 immune disorder characterized by eosinophil infiltration of the esophageal mucosa.

Method

Retrospective study of patients with EoE from Oct/2008-Dec/2024. Data obtained from clinical records. Clinical, laboratory and histological characteristics, comorbidities, therapeutic approach and age of onset of symptoms and age of diagnosis were studied.

Results

34 patients with EoE included: 88.2% male, mean age of onset of symptoms 22.8±10.6 and of diagnosis 27.6±10.6. Dysphagia (85.3%), food impaction (76.5%) and feeding disorders (64.7%) were the most frequent symptoms. 73.5% suffered from at least one allergic comorbidity, with rhinitis being more common (67.6%). 70.6% had coexisting gastritis and/or duodenitis. Mean biopsy eosinophil count was 81±63 per visual field and 500±311 by absolute count in peripheral blood with total IgE 283±336 U/mL. All patients were treated with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) as monotherapy or in combination with other treatment options.

Conclusion

The study provides information on the clinical features, diagnostic evaluation, treatment methods and comorbidities in adults with EoE. Treatment aims to relieve symptoms, improve quality of life and prevent complications such as strictures and esophageal fibrosis. A multidisciplinary approach for early and accurate diagnosis, and regular follow-up is important for effective disease management.
